Over het museum
The museum grew out of friendship between artists and the town of Céret. In 1934 the widow of a local collector gave the commune her husband's collection, with works by Juan Gris, Auguste Herbin, André Masson, Moïse Kisling and Manolo. In 1948 the painters Frank Burty Haviland and Pierre Brune launched the project of a museum of modern art, appealing to the artists who had stayed in the town.
Picasso and Matisse were the two major supporters of the project. Picasso gave several dozen works, including a series of ceramic plates on the theme of bullfighting. Matisse donated preparatory drawings for the Fauvist paintings made at Collioure in 1905. Other artists, such as Chagall, Miró, Soutine or Marquet, added to the collection through later gifts.
From the 1960s the museum opened up to contemporary art, and it was modernized and enlarged in 1986. It changed status in the 2000s and gained a new wing. It is now a public cultural cooperation institution and holds the Musée de France label. A circuit devoted to contemporary art opened in 2025.
