Over het museum

Lupiac is the birthplace of Charles de Batz de Castelmore, known as d'Artagnan, born around 1613. He left his village around 1630 to become captain of the musketeers and a trusted man of Louis XIV. He was killed at Maastricht on June 25, 1673, at the head of the king's first company of musketeers. His name later became a legend thanks to Alexandre Dumas's novels and numerous film adaptations.

The museum is housed in the Saint-Jacques chapel, about 200 metres from the village's main square. The chapel was built at the end of the 15th century and dedicated to Notre-Dame de Pitié; it belonged to the White Penitents. Bertrand de Batz de Castelmore, d'Artagnan's uncle, had a hospice built here to care for villagers and pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela, hence its present name. It was restored in 1882.

The visit lasts about an hour and offers a sound and visual route with an audio guide. Many documents and reproductions of artworks tell the real story of d'Artagnan and his historical context. On the main square stands the first equestrian statue of the musketeer, inaugurated on August 9, 2015.
