Over het museum

The museum was founded at the initiative of former mayor of Saint-Martin-en-Campagne, Bernard Defoy, who wanted to give residents a place dedicated to their own history, in the spirit of folk arts and traditions museums. The commune acquired the oldest house in the village, the Maison Mercier, a small 16th-century half-timbered manor house, and had it dismantled and restored. Restoration and construction work was completed in 2013, and the museum opened its doors on May 16, 2014.

The building combines the restored Maison Mercier with a contemporary structure housing the reception and exhibition rooms. To build its collections, the commune relied on the association of the Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires du Talou, based in Dieppe, whose holdings of some 20,000 objects cover daily life and trades from 1890 to 1999. About 1,000 pieces were transferred to the museum, and nearly 8,000 are held there on deposit.

Today, the museum displays some 1,300 objects collected around Dieppe in a contemporary setting. The themes covered are agriculture, crafts, industry, services and trade, social and cultural life, and domestic life. Temporary exhibitions and a program for all audiences complement the route.
