Over het museum

The Bibracte museum stands at the foot of Mont Beuvray in the Morvan, on the edge of the archaeological site of the former capital of the Aedui people. Bibracte was an oppidum, a large fortified town that emerged in the 2nd century BCE, at the same time as some two hundred others across much of temperate Europe. The town lasted only about a hundred years: the Aedui moved their capital to Augustodunum, today’s Autun, shortly before the turn of the era, and the forest then covered the hill.

The building was designed by the architect Pierre-Louis Faloci. Its materials, from rough stone to zinc and steel roofs, evoke the succession of ages, and its square grid recalls excavation squares. It received the Équerre d’argent and, in 2025, together with the European Archaeological Centre, the “Architecture contemporaine remarquable” label. The museum received the “musée de France” designation in 2018.

The route spans two floors. On the second floor, original or copied objects, models and documents show the rise of the oppida and the industrialisation of production at the end of the Iron Age. On the first floor, objects from the excavations on Mont Beuvray show the ramparts, workshops, houses and necropolis of Bibracte. An animated model recounts the successive excavations, and a tablet device lets visitors consult the archives of several areas of the site.
