Over het museum
The museum occupies the Cal Mateu estate in Sainte-Léocadie, a large 18th-century Cerdanya farm. After the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659, Cerdanya was split in two, and 33 villages became French. In 1689, François Sicart, a notary from Saillagouse, became viguier of Cerdanya, that is, the king's representative. His modest farm in Sainte-Léocadie then became a viguerie, the seat of royal power for about a century.
The Revolution abolished the office of viguier. In 1810 the estate was sold to a merchant, Mathieu Riu, and took its present name of Cal Mateu. It remained a working farm until the 1990s, when the tenant farmers Jacques and Marie Bragulat, who had lived there since 1952, retired. The site has been a listed historic monument since 1984 and has held the “Musée de France” label since 1997.
The permanent exhibitions tell the story of Cerdanya through the ages: the border, smuggling, the forest and woodworking, and rural life, including a reconstructed Cerdan kitchen and the barn of the last tenant farmer. The high-altitude kitchen garden, at 1,330 metres, preserves old and local varieties of vegetables, cereals and forage plants.
