Over het museum

The Châtillon-Coligny museum is housed in the town’s former Hôtel-Dieu, a building protected as a historic monument with an old porch. It has borne the “Musée de France” designation since 2003. Its collections originated from the deposit of finds from archaeological excavations carried out in the canton of Châtillon-Coligny.

The display follows the history of the area: princely burials from the 5th century BC and a Celtic cemetery, then Gallo-Roman coins and votive offerings, as well as late antique tombs. It goes on to the 16th century, the Reformation and the Coligny family, including Admiral Gaspard II, and their Protestant college. The town is presented as a major centre of French Protestantism.

The museum also brings together paintings and furniture of the Montmorency-Luxembourg family, who occupied the Château de Châtillon-Luxembourg for nearly three centuries, including the table of the Constables of Montmorency. One section is devoted to the four Becquerels, including Henri, who discovered natural radioactivity in 1896. Part of the collection is also available online.
