Over het museum
The Musée de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame was founded in 1931 to bring four collections of medieval and Renaissance art under one roof: the cathedral's sculptures, which had been removed for safekeeping; the holdings of the Society for the Preservation of Historic Monuments of Alsace; and pieces from two older museums in the city. After the Second World War it was completely reorganised and reopened in 1956 in a form close to today's.
It is housed in the Maison de l'Œuvre Notre-Dame, the historic seat of the foundation that has been responsible for building and maintaining the cathedral since the 13th century. The Gothic wing dates from 1347, the Renaissance wing from 1579, with a fine spiral staircase and a large portal. Neighbouring houses from the 14th and 17th centuries were added to the museum in 1939, and a reconstructed Gothic garden completes the visit.
The route presents the art of Strasbourg and the Upper Rhine from the early Middle Ages to 1681: original statues from the cathedral, wood and stone sculptures, altarpieces, stained glass, tapestries, Gothic architectural drawings and paintings, notably by Konrad Witz, Hans Baldung Grien and Sébastien Stoskopff.
