Over het museum
The Musée de l'Outil grew out of the collections of Claude and Françoise Pigeard, who have been gathering tools from traditional trades threatened with extinction since the 1960s. It opened in May 1977 in a restored 18th-century building in Wy-dit-Joli-Village. Since 2011, the Val-d'Oise Department has been responsible for promoting, opening and maintaining the site.
The remains of a small Gallo-Roman bathhouse were discovered in the village in 1975. Excavations were carried out by the Centre de recherches archéologiques du Vexin français, and the baths were listed as a historic monument on November 13, 1983. The site also includes a medieval-style garden with medicinal plants, vegetables and flowers, labelled “Jardin remarquable” by the Ministry of Culture.
The collections present several hundred tools, arranged by trade: clog maker, cooper, blacksmith, joiner, harness maker and farrier. The rooms are organised around woodworking, metalworking, agriculture and rural life, and arts and folk traditions, with a reconstruction of Claude's forge. The museum also offers temporary exhibitions and workshops.
