Over het museum
The Musée de la Céramique de Rouen was founded in 1864. Since 1984 it has occupied the Hôtel d’Hocqueville, a 17th-century town mansion protected as a historic monument, built on the remains of the city's former castle. There is a garden behind the building.
The collections comprise around 6,000 objects and showcase Rouen faience. The route presents its major periods: the production of the Poterat family in the 17th century, blue camaïeux, the five-colour decoration, the introduction of red, the rocaille style and the décor à la corne, as well as decoration inspired by China and faience paintings and sculptures. The work of Masséot Abaquesne, a Renaissance potter from Rouen, is also featured.
Other production centres are represented: Delft, Lille, Nevers, fine earthenware and porcelain, and the Sèvres manufactory.
The museum is part of the Réunion des Musées Métropolitains Rouen Normandie. The museum and its garden are closed until further notice, with no reopening date announced.
