Over het museum
The Musée de la Céramique et de l’Ivoire is housed in Commercy's former municipal baths, a building in the Art Deco style. It owes its existence to the bequest of Dr Albert Guillaume Boyer, a collector who had made his home in the Meuse département. His passion built up a collection with no connection to any local ivory production.
His collection of 17th- to 19th-century ivories is the second largest in France after that of Dieppe. It includes ivory reproductions of sculpted or painted works, which reflect the 18th-century taste for imitation, historical figures, religious objects, and utilitarian or decorative pieces such as toys and toilet sets. The Boyer bequest also included Chinese and European faience and porcelain from the 18th and 19th centuries. Lorraine faience holds an important place, notably that of the Meuse manufactory Les Islettes, which was active into the 19th century under the name Fabrique du Bois d’Epense.
The storerooms hold ancient weapons from the Boyer collection and painted textiles (toiles peintes) bequeathed in 1942 by Adrien Recouvreur, a native of Commercy. The museum is part of the Musées de la Meuse network.
