Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1985 and was symbolically opened on July 14 by Guy Halna du Fretay. It presents itself as the only museum in France devoted to the Chouannerie, the Vendée and the Wars of the West. It is located at the entrance to the Quiberon peninsula, south of Plouharnel, in a blockhouse-infirmary built by the German army in 1941.
The site lies on the republican defense line of the Battle of Quiberon in July 1795, in which the Chouan troops and the émigrés under d’Hervilly fought the armies of General Hoche. From the museum you can see the Sainte-Barbe hill, where Hoche stationed himself to follow the battle.
More than 400 items (maps, documents, weapons, costumes, objects, prints and military figurines) trace the events of the Wars of the West from 1793 to 1832, displayed in cases and with explanatory panels. The highlights include a guillotine and the portrait of Georges Cadoudal, the only known portrait made during his lifetime (1804), which the museum acquired in 2010.
