Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1923 under the name “Musée régional”, to gather objects relating to the history and traditions of Sarreguemines. Its collections were dispersed during the Second World War. After reopening in 1972, it focused on ceramic arts, with production from the factory and contemporary creation.
It occupies the former apartments of Paul de Geiger, director of the Sarreguemines faience factories from 1871 to 1913. The highlight of the visit is the winter garden (Jardin d’hiver), fitted out between 1880 and 1882: its walls are entirely covered with faience tiles, with a monumental fountain, views of the town and medallions of Paul Utzschneider and Alexandre de Geiger.
The rooms, recently renovated, display faience, stoneware and porcelain produced between the 19th and 20th centuries. They also trace the history of the factory, founded in 1790 and closed in 2007, and the everyday life of its workers. Outside the museum stands a faience kiln 11 metres high.
