Over het museum
The museum occupies a former factory, the Manufacture Ardennaise de boulons et ferrures de wagons (Ardennes factory for bolts and railway-wagon fittings), founded in 1884 by the engineer Emile Despas. The building, with fifteen bays, was built in the Meuse plain and lit by long metal windows; it illustrates the second industrialisation. Its machines ran first on steam and later on hydroelectric power. The factory became SEFAC in 1960, moved to Monthermé in 1968, and the site was largely destroyed in 1980.
In summer 1989, the association Traditions et Innovations Métallurgiques Ardennaises (ATIMA) moved its exhibition into a disused bay of the factory. The current version of the museum opened in May 2009, in two bays.
The route presents the activities of metal processing in a lively way, with films, audiovisual animations, interactive models and commented iconography: machines, tools and manufactured products, workshops and factories. It also brings to life the working lives of employees, paternalism, trade unionism and social struggles, as well as the spread of socialism through Jean-Baptiste Clément. The visit begins with a film of worker testimonies and includes a reconstruction of a nail-maker’s workshop.
