Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1972 by Albert Ciurana, a community pharmacist. It is housed in the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Montpellier, where the discipline has been taught since the 13th century. It tells the history of pharmacy in all its forms: industrial, biological, hospital and community pharmacy.
The collections keep growing thanks to donations. The museum is run by volunteers, all of them qualified pharmacists. It presents itself as the only pharmacy museum of this importance located on a university campus.
The route recreates the atmosphere of 19th- and 20th-century pharmacies and evokes the everyday life of the master apothecaries of Montpellier. It features herbaria, machines, porcelain and antique faience, as well as raw materials from botany, physical chemistry, mycology and toxicology. The museum also honors scientists of Montpellier's pharmacy tradition, such as Antoine-Jérôme Balard, who discovered bromine, and Jules-Émile Planchon, botanist and dean of the School of Pharmacy, who helped save the Languedoc vineyards during the phylloxera crisis.
