Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1909 on the initiative of Police Prefect Louis Lépine, using items gathered for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. The prefect wanted to bring the police closer to the public and to show visitors from around the world the humanity of the Paris police, through portraits of prefects and objects from the police heritage. It opened on December 20, 1909 under the roof of 36 quai des Orfèvres, then moved in June 1975 to rue de la Montagne Sainte-Geneviève, where it still is today.
The collections then grew through purchases and gifts. Two donations are especially important: that of Gustave Macé, former head of the Sûreté, who kept evidence in his office, and that of Charles Péchard, a police commissioner, who gave weapons, police equipment and burglary tools. The museum holds more than 2,000 works, including uniforms, weapons, paintings, prints, photographs, posters and evidence items.
A selection is displayed over 300 m² on the fourth floor of the police headquarters. The route runs from the creation of the lieutenance générale de police in 1667 to the present day, including the founding of the Préfecture de Police in 1800, several major criminal cases and the trades of the prefecture. A space opened in 2020 is devoted to technical and scientific policing, with the work of Alphonse Bertillon and his identification system.
