Over het museum
After the war, members of the Resistance and deportees committed to passing on the memory of this period to younger generations, in particular through the Concours national de la Résistance et de la Déportation, created in 1961. In the Hautes-Pyrénées, survivors and their families organized a traveling exhibition for schools in the 1980s, and several associations wanted to turn it into a museum as early as 1985.
In 1988 the exhibition moved into part of the Victor-Hugo school, a building erected a century earlier by Gustave-Joseph Labat. The founders designed the furniture, gathered texts and photographic reproductions, and received objects from former deportees and Resistance members. The museum opened its doors on January 7, 1989.
On December 1, 1992, the founding associations handed over the museum and its collections to the City of Tarbes. For a while, former Resistance members and deportees continued to guide school groups as witnesses; the city's museum department then took over the collections, educational work and programming.
The museum displays numerous photographs, press clippings, reproductions of posters and postage stamps on the Second World War. The objects in the display cases are originals: deportee uniforms, objects made in the camps, weapons and objects from the Resistance. It also houses a documentation center that can be consulted by appointment.
