Over het museum

The museum was founded in 1958 by the Société d'archéologie de Briord, based on material found in the Souhait caves at Montagnieu, the Côte du Mopard at Glandieu and La Balme à Roland at Lompnaz, as well as in the Les Plantées necropolis at Briord. It was inaugurated on September 11, 1960. The association wanted to keep on site all the objects found during its research.

The museum was first housed temporarily in the parish presbytery. In 1985 it moved to a municipal building in the centre of the village. Between 1955 and 1991 the society excavated these sites and others, including Le Colombier at Sault-Brénaz, and the museum keeps all the material recovered. As a site museum, it also receives deposits from researchers and private individuals.

The objects are displayed in chronological order. The Armand Rigoulot room is devoted to the Gallo-Roman and Merovingian necropolis of Les Plantées: funerary rites are studied there, with inhumation and cremation burials, funerary toilet objects, jewellery, pottery and coins. Gold pendants, monogram rings and a case of artificial cranial deformation are also on show. Upstairs, the Henri Parriat room presents material from the Souhait cave and other sites, from the Mesolithic to protohistory: flint, worked bone, pottery and polished axes.
