Over het museum

The Tour aux Puces is the former keep of the castle that the counts of Luxembourg had built in Thionville, probably in the 11th or 12th century. This unusual fourteen-sided building measures 19.10 meters in diameter and 13.40 meters at its maximum height. Provosts responsible for administering the town lived there from 1292. The Raville family remodeled it, and the tower then remained in military use until the early 20th century. Its name probably comes from a mistranslation from Luxembourgish into French, although legends link it to Charlemagne.

Major works launched in 1902 by Mayor Nicolas Crauser cleared the area around the tower and revealed the remains of the former Augustinian convent. Tombstones, a retable and keystones formed the museum's first collections, which was set up in the tower.

In 1940 the collections left the tower, which had been converted into an anti-aircraft post. They suffered thefts and dispersal. The museum reopened in 1966, and again in 2001 after modernization, with a panoramic view of the tombstones displayed under a glass floor.

Today the museum holds the “Musée de France” label. It presents the archaeological collections of the Thionville region from Prehistory to the Renaissance, in a chronological route through eight themed rooms.
