Over het museum

The museum's collections date back to the 19th century and to local collectors. Émile Chabrand's cabinet of curiosities was bequeathed in 1893. In 1934, a still modest museum moved to the second floor of the new town hall. In 1948, Antoine Signoret made a major donation, and in 1971 he bequeathed the Villa La Sapinière to the town. In 1983, the town decided to relaunch the museum, which opened under the name Musée de la Vallée in March 1988. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2002.

The villa was built in 1878 by Alexandre Reynaud, who had returned from Mexico, and was extensively remodeled in the 1880s, then around 1895–1900 by the Grenoble architect Francis Girard. It belongs to the first generation of villas built by emigrants who came back from Mexico, and it is the only Mexican-style villa in the town open to visitors. The park, created in 1878, has been a public municipal garden since 1971.

The museum is run by the town of Barcelonnette. Its collections cover fine arts, ethnography, archaeology, natural history and photography. A new display designed by the Italian studio Officina82 and opened on December 1, 2019, offers an interactive, audio-enhanced route. The rooms cover the people of the Ubaye and Piedmont, the Gleize donation, Émile Chabrand, the Barcelonnettes aux Amériques (emigrants from Barcelonnette to the Americas), objects from Mexico, and the painters Jean Caire and Marie Tonoir.
