Over het museum

The Visitation monastery of Moulins, founded on August 25, 1616, is the third of the order. In 1990 it was on the verge of disappearing, and Gérard Picaud proposed keeping the memory of this community alive. He obtained a space in the Musée bourbonnais and, with the help of some fifteen French and Belgian monasteries, gathered 602 objects. On December 11, 1992, the permanent exhibition “Regard sur la Visitation” opened in three rooms.

In 2000 an extension of two rooms was launched to show a set of goldsmiths' work. In 2003, volunteers, including Visitandine sisters from Moulins, formed an association to take over the structure. The site on the Place de l'Ancien Palais officially became the Musée de la Visitation in 2005, with the approval of the Holy See.

The museum is a private institution run by the association Regard sur la Visitation. Its collections number more than 12,000 pieces, from the 16th to the 21st century, and twelve rooms display more than a thousand objects. The textile collection is the highlight, with 2,500 pieces including more than 300 liturgical vestments, often embroidered by the nuns. The museum also displays goldsmiths' work, graphic arts, devotional objects made of rolled paper, testimonies of daily life behind the cloister, and an archive collection open to researchers.
