Musée de Meung-sur-Loire

Over het museum

Since November 2005, the Meung-sur-Loire museum has occupied fully renovated premises. It is part of the La Monnaye cultural centre, whose name recalls a mint that struck copper coins called liards in the 17th century.

The permanent display has three areas. The first presents rare and precious books, assembled since 1994: texts by François Villon and Jehan de Meung, two authors linked to the town, as well as editions of Alexandre Dumas's The Three Musketeers, whose opening pages are set in Meung. The oldest book dates from 1521.

The second area is devoted to the collection of François Quatrehomme, built up over almost forty years around Meung-sur-Loire, Beaugency and Thenay. It includes fossils, prehistoric and ancient objects, teeth from the Faluns sea and a coin collection; the collector's study has been recreated.

The third area commemorates Gaston Couté (1880–1911), a libertarian poet and chansonnier who spent his childhood in Meung-sur-Loire. Photographs, drawings, poems, manuscripts and sheet music trace his life and work. A room for temporary exhibitions completes the visit.
