Over het museum
The Musée de Sologne was founded in 1882. Ovide Scribe, born in 1841, settled in Romorantin in 1880, became a drawing teacher and then the museum’s first curator, and bequeathed his art collection to the town in 1909. In the early 1950s a project for a museum of folk art and traditions took shape, with a deposit from the Musée national des arts et traditions populaires at its core.
The museum occupies two former mills linked by footbridges over the river, as well as a tower from the town’s first medieval fortifications. It has carried the “Musée de France” label since September 17, 2003.
The collections relate mainly to ethnology, history and natural science: costumes, housing, crafts and tools, religious practices, geology, local and regional history, modern and contemporary art (notably ceramics), religious art and decorative arts, as well as archives, photographs and manuscripts. Henri Helis and Ovide Scribe are the most represented artists. The history of Romorantin, shaped by the cloth trade and the company Matra, holds an important place. In 2024 the town acquired the archives and a series of photographs from the studio of the painter Henri Helis, and the Friends of the Museum association bought works for the museum.
