Over het museum
The Hameau de Pirelonge is a village made up of several former farms belonging to the same family of winegrowers and distillers, whose activity dates back to 1750. The ecomuseum was set up there in 1987 around these Saintonge houses, to bring back to life rural life, architecture and the crafts of the past. The hamlet is dominated by the Tour de Pirelonge, a listed monument that the tourist guide dates to the 1st century.
The museum's starting point is the family expertise in making cognac and essential oils. Its themes were later broadened: the museum of stills and the ecomuseum of pineau, the lavender museum with its scent trail and perfume workshop, the museum of printing and paper, which has around a hundred presses, and a weaving and embroidery workshop.
It is a living museum, where distillations can be seen at certain times of year: from December to March for cognac, and from late July to early August for lavender and lavandin. Rural festivals and summer events add to the year. The visits are narrated by the Brillouet family, who still run the estate and its distillery.
