Over het museum
The museum grew out of the passion of Jean Cretin, a former adjutant-chef who became mayor of Beure. From the 1960s onward he gathered uniforms, flags, newspapers and objects related to the wars. He dedicated the collection to the memory of his uncle, Lucien Roy, the village's first soldier to die in combat, in 1915.
The museum opened in 1983 in an 18th-century winegrower's house. Jean Cretin, born in 1928 and a veteran of Indochina and Algeria, served as mayor of the commune for 24 years. He died in 2010.
Today the association “Amis du Musée Lucien Roy” keeps the place alive. Volunteers welcome and guide visitors and collect new donations. Around ten rooms on several levels display weapons, uniforms, posters, photographs and everyday objects.
The route covers more than 150 years of French military history, from the war of 1870 to recent overseas operations. It also focuses on individual fates: soldiers, resistance fighters, prisoners, nurses and civilians.
