Over het museum
The Musée d’Arts africains, océaniens et amérindiens was founded in 1992 on the initiative of archaeologist and anthropologist Alain Nicolas. It occupies the third floor of the Centre de la Vieille Charité in Marseille’s 2nd arrondissement; the Musée d’archéologie méditerranéenne is on the second floor.
The route brings together non-European art objects, seen both as cultural witnesses and as works in their own right, and pairs looking with scientific information about the societies concerned. It notably presents masks from major collections assembled in the 20th century.
Three rooms organize the collections. The Africa room shows the gift of the heirs of the lawyer Pierre Guerre, supplemented by objects from the city’s former colonial museums. The Oceania and Americas room presents the collection of Dr. Gastaut, made up of human skulls carved, painted or engraved, acquired by the city in 1989, as well as feather ornaments of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. The Mexico room is devoted to a collection of more than three thousand objects of folk art, bequeathed by filmmaker François Reichenbach.
