Over het museum

The idea of a museum in Bernay emerged at the beginning of the 19th century. In 1865 Alphonse Assegond offered the town his collection of faience on condition that he become its first curator; the offer was accepted in 1866 and the museum opened in 1868 in two ground-floor rooms of the town hall. It then presented itself as an encyclopaedic provincial museum, combining fine arts, antiquities and natural sciences.

The Lobrot bequest of 1887 required a new site. The town acquired the upper floor of the former abbey lodging, near the abbey church. The archaeologist Pierre-Victorien Lottin de Laval designed the layout in 1891, with white arcades and a Salon carré inspired by the one in the Louvre. In the 1930s the museum received the whole abbey lodging.

The collections were enriched by gifts from the State, including Etruscan ceramics from the Campana collection and paintings from the Louvre, as well as objects linked to local history, such as the ribbon industry. In 2005 the bequest of Henri de Maistre’s studio brought in more than a thousand works. The museum has held the Musée de France label since 2002.
