Over het museum

In 1829 the Dunkerque city council appealed for donations to build a first collection, and a municipal museum was founded in 1838. Revolutionary seizures brought in more than a hundred paintings, mostly Flemish, and sea captains on long voyages brought back exotic objects from the colonies. The museum opened on June 27, 1841 in part of the Palais de Justice.

In 1877 the city had a “museum-library” built on land acquired after the death of the MP Benjamin Morel. Gifts from merchants and several 19th-century bequests enriched the holdings, and the State sent regular loans until the 1970s.

The collection comprises more than 24,000 works and objects: Flemish, Dutch, French and Italian paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, more than 10,000 natural history specimens, decorative arts and archaeology objects, including a mummy covered in gold leaf, local history items and more than 3,000 objects from the five continents. The museum closed on April 1, 2015. Since then, the “Destination Musée” label has promoted its collections through off-site exhibitions while awaiting a new home.
