Over het museum
The Musée des impressionnismes Giverny succeeded the Musée d’Art américain, founded in 1992 by Daniel J. Terra, founder of the Terra Foundation for American Art. This first museum presented a private collection in a building on the hillside where Claude Monet had painted his haystacks in the 1890s. For sixteen years it organised numerous exhibitions, publications and lectures on American art.
In 2009, a partnership between the Terra Foundation, the departments of Eure and Seine-Maritime, the Haute-Normandie region, the urban community and the town of Vernon, and the Musée d’Orsay gave rise to the Musée des impressionnismes. Its plural name indicates that it explores Impressionism in the broad sense, with its origins and its successors.
Since 2009, the museum has organised exhibitions on artists such as Bonnard, Degas or Caillebotte and on themes such as Japonisme or the garden, and it also invites contemporary artists. It has built a collection centred on Impressionism through acquisitions, loans and gifts, supported by a circle of patrons and a friends’ association. The museum garden, created in 1992, has more than 22,000 planted flowers and lies just a few metres from Monet’s house and gardens.
