Over het museum
The museum is housed in the School of Airborne Troops (École des troupes aéroportées, ETAP), founded in 1947 in Pau. It developed around the school's hall of honour, inaugurated in 1964, when the museum opened. In 1984 it became the national museum of the paratroopers, a tradition museum of the French Army. The present museum was inaugurated in 1997.
The route traces the history of French paratroopers from the pioneers of 1937 to contemporary operations, through the Second World War, Indochina and Algeria. It covers around 1,200 m² and presents chronological displays, figures in action settings, weapons and period uniforms, vehicles and aircraft, including a Noratlas, a Transall and helicopters.
At the heart of the museum, a crypt pays tribute to disbanded units and to paratroopers who fell in combat; it houses, among other things, the flags of several disbanded regiments. The museum also has a documentation centre with nearly 1,400 books and photographic archives. It operates thanks to the support association UNP 640, the local section of the Union nationale des parachutistes, and its volunteers. According to the museum, it holds more than 10,000 items.
