Over het museum
The collection of plans-reliefs began in 1668, when Louis XIV commissioned models of fortified places to follow the fortification works carried out by his engineers, particularly in the towns conquered in Flanders. These models served as strategic tools: they helped prepare the defense of the kingdom and study sieges. From the 1690s the engineers codified the techniques, using a scale of about 1:600.
The collection was installed in 1700 in the Grande Galerie of the Louvre, then moved in 1777 to the attics of the Hôtel des Invalides, where it remains today. It was first opened to the public in 1799. In 1815 the Prussians carried off nineteen plans-reliefs of fortified places in the east and north. Production of new models ended in 1870, and the collection was listed as a historic monument in 1927.
The Musée des Plans-Reliefs was created in 1943. Two renovated galleries reopened to the public in 1997, and the collection was the subject of an exhibition at the Grand Palais in 2012. Fourteen plans-reliefs are now on loan in Lille.
Today these models show the gradual construction of the French state from the 17th to the 19th century, but also the history of towns, fortification and land planning. The museum is a national collection, and its ticket is shared with the other museums of the Invalides.
