Over het museum
The museum occupies the château de la Pandelle, a Second Empire building set in a large wooded park. The property belonged to a wealthy family from Soustons until 1972, when it was sold to the commune, which intended to set up the town hall there before abandoning the plan. From 1984 to 1997, the château housed the gendarmerie squadron responsible for protecting the President of the Republic during his stays at Latche.
The museum opened in July 1999. Most of the objects come from the private collection of Gérard Séprit, which the commune bought the same year and which comprised around 800 tools. Many donors later contributed more than 300 tools from various trades. Today around 950 items are on display, and about a hundred are being restored; passionate volunteers clean them and bring them back into good condition.
The route consists of an entrance and three rooms, organised by theme. The largest tools are in the entrance. The first room shows fieldwork tools, the second those of craftspeople (such as clog makers and coopers), and the last the tools of resin tapping, that is, the harvesting of pine resin.
