Over het museum
The museum grew out of the association Le Vieux Marly, an archaeological, historical and artistic society founded in 1930. In 1934 it installed its collections in the Pavillon du Butard in Vaucresson; during the war, the collections were sheltered in other museums. A first museum opened on May 5, 1968, in the Chenil building, now the town hall of Marly-le-Roi. The collections soon outgrew the space.
In 1971 the towns of Marly-le-Roi and Louveciennes joined forces to create a museum, and an intercommunal syndicate was founded in 1976 to build and run it. Named Musée-Promenade in reference to the walk through the Marly park, the current building opened on October 18, 1982, on the site of the historic entrance to the royal estate, the Grille royale. Le Vieux Marly donated its collections to the museum.
After a renovation carried out from 2017 to 2019, the museum took the name Musée du domaine royal de Marly. Its route evokes the Château de Marly, built in 1679 as a retreat for Louis XIV, with twelve pavilions around the king’s own, and the Marly Machine, which supplied water to the gardens. It then follows the fate of the estate after the king’s death in 1715, up to the present day. The museum holds the Musée de France label.
