Over het museum
The Musée du Loup grew out of the collection of the naturalist Édouard Lebeurier, whose archives and herbarium were given in 1986 to the curator of the Landes du Cragou nature reserve. In 1991, the commune of Le Cloître-Saint-Thégonnec, the SEPNB-Bretagne Vivante and the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique turned them into a summer exhibition, “Le loup et le paysage” (The Wolf and the Landscape). It was continued the following year as the “Maison du paysage et du loup” (House of the Landscape and the Wolf), housed in the village’s former boys’ school and run by the association “Sur les pas de Lebeurier”.
In 2000, after building work, the museum doubled its area and has offered 400 m² of exhibition space since then; it was officially inaugurated in 2001. At the end of 2013 it closed for six months for a complete overhaul of the scenography and route, and reopened at the end of April 2014 in its present form. In 2016, the Parc naturel régional d’Armorique awarded it the “Accueil du Parc” mark.
The route, spread over around ten rooms, covers the biology and behaviour of the wolf, its disappearance from Brittany, wolf hunting (louveterie) and traps, the place of the wolf in European biodiversity, and its image in tales, legends and children’s literature. It includes stuffed wolves, a reconstructed wolf den and several interactive devices.
