Over het museum
The museum opened on July 9, 1932, thanks to the Société académique and several donors, among them Parisian publisher Édouard Champion, then deputy mayor, who became its first curator. Its collection grew gradually through gifts and deposits.
In 1989 it moved into the Villa Way Side, a fine Anglo-Norman style residence built in 1925 by architect Henri Léon Bloch, in the heart of the Le Touquet-Paris-Plage forest. This setting made it possible to open the collection to modern and contemporary art, a direction launched in 1991 with a regular program of exhibitions.
The collections include paintings and works on paper from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, linked to the birth of Paris-Plage and the Étaples painters’ colony, as well as more than 250 signed photographic portraits from the Champion collection. The holdings of French modern and contemporary art from the second half of the 20th century have been strengthened by donations, notably that of André Le Bozec in 2016, and by the deposit of a private collection devoted to artists of the School of Paris’s second generation.
