Over het museum
The museum opened in 1983 under the name Musée du Travail and has been called Musée des Métiers since 2020. It is run by the association “Montfermeil et sa région”, which also includes the town's historical society. It occupies the last surviving building of the 17th-century manor farm, listed as a historic monument since 1984, with a fine old timber roof frame.
The collections bring together several thousand tools once used by farmers, workers and craftspeople of the north-east of the Paris region, covering more than 70 trades. The first floor has two rooms: one devoted to agriculture (ploughing, sowing, harvesting, vines, care of draught animals), the other to forestry trades, very present in Montfermeil because the village is partly enclosed by the Forêt de Bondy.
The second floor is dedicated to craft and building trades, as well as women's activities such as sewing, ironing and lace-making. Animal-drawn farm machinery is displayed outdoors. The collection continues to grow thanks to the work of volunteers.
