Over het museum

The Musée du Vieux Nîmes occupies the ground floor of the city's former bishop's palace. After the Wars of Religion, Louis XIV ordered the reconstruction of the cathedral and of a new palace for the bishop. The classical plans were drawn by the Paris architect Alexis de la Feuille de Merville and carried out by Jacques Cubizol of Nîmes, between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. The building became national property during the Revolution, housed the prefecture from 1807, returned to the clergy in 1822 and remained the residence of the bishops until 1906. The City of Nîmes bought it in 1910.

The museum was founded in 1921 at the initiative of the municipal commission for archaeology and local history, with councillor Henri Bauquier. It belongs to the tradition of local history museums in southern France, such as the Museon Arlaten in Arles or the Musée du Vieux-Marseille. The first collections came from the fine arts and archaeology museums; the founding members enriched them with their own gifts and bequests.

The holdings tell the story of Nîmes and the Gard from the Middle Ages to the present day: local history, the Nîmes textile industry, furniture and ceramics. There are also graphic arts, paintings, sculptures, folk objects and images of the city. The textiles reflect Nîmes' reputation, from wool to serge de Nîmes and from silk to 19th-century cashmere shawls.
