Over het museum
The mansion on Boulevard Longchamp was built in 1873 for Alexandre Labadié, an industrialist and politician. His daughter Marie, widow of Bruno Vayson, later married the painter and musician Louis Grobet. The couple travelled throughout Europe and gathered more than 7,000 pieces. In 1919, Marie Grobet-Labadié gave the house and its collections to the City of Marseille on condition that they be turned into a museum.
The museum opened to the public in January 1926. Set in the decor of a 19th-century bourgeois residence, it presents furniture, tapestries from Aubusson, Brussels and the Gobelins, musical instruments, faience from Moustiers, Marseille and Rouen, medieval and Renaissance objects, and paintings by Monticelli, Guigou, Ziem and Raspal. It received the “Musée de France” label in 2003.
The museum closed in 2013 and reopened in 2019 for an exhibition by Sophie Calle. Since 2020 it has been accessible only during exceptional openings. The mansion has been listed as a monument historique since 2022 and classified as one since 2025. The City of Marseille has now announced its closure until further notice.
