Over het museum
The Musée Hèbre occupies the former mansion of the Hèbre de Saint-Clément family, a wealthy merchant family from Rochefort. The town acquired it in 1806. With its 72 rooms, the building served as a school, as offices of the sub-prefecture and as a literary club before being thoroughly remodeled in the 1830s.
The Rochefort fine arts museum was founded in 1864 on the initiative of mayor Eugène Roy-Brie. The painter Alexandre Fiocchi gave up his personal collection, and the State regularly sent works on loan. The museum was built on the encyclopedic model of the time, with painting, natural history and objects from other continents.
The museum closed in 2003 and reopened in 2006 in an entirely new building designed by the architect Pierre-Louis Faloci, who kept only the two 18th-century street façades. The galleries are spread over four levels around a large atrium. The museum now bears the name Musée Hèbre and also houses the town’s heritage department.
The collections range from fine arts to non-European ethnology: orientalist painting and realist landscapes, but also objects brought back from Oceania, Asia and Africa by doctors and naval officers connected to Rochefort. On the first floor, the interpretation center for architecture and heritage displays a plan-relief model of the town made in 1835.
