Over het museum
The Musée Jacquemart-André occupies the townhouse built between 1869 and 1875 by the architect Henri Parent for the banker Édouard André, on the boulevard Haussmann. Édouard André and his wife, the painter Nélie Jacquemart, assembled an important art collection there, displayed in sumptuous salons that have kept their original décor.
After Édouard André died in 1894, Nélie Jacquemart continued building the collections, especially Italian art. She bequeathed the house and its contents to the Institut de France, on condition that it become a museum open to the public, which was done in 1913. The mansion has been a listed historic monument since 1978.
The collections consist mainly of Italian paintings and sculptures, from the Primitives to the Renaissance, with works by Botticelli, Mantegna and Uccello, as well as Flemish, Dutch and French paintings, furniture and decorative objects. A fresco by Tiepolo and the grand staircase were restored starting in autumn 2023. Since the 1990s the museum has been run by Culturespaces, which also organises temporary exhibitions, a tea room and a shop.
