Beperkt geopend (naar verwachting tot 2026-12). “Le Chant du monde” is currently on loan to the Cité internationale de la tapisserie d’Aubusson; the series returns to Angers from December 2026.

Over het museum

The museum occupies the former Hôpital Saint-Jean, a large hospital complex founded around 1175 and run for centuries. After hospital activity ended, the buildings housed an antiquities museum from 1865 onward.

In 1967, the City of Angers acquired “Le Chant du monde”, a suite of ten large tapestries designed by Jean Lurçat from 1957 and woven at Aubusson. The hospital’s medieval ward was then fitted out to display this ensemble, which has become one of the major works of 20th-century tapestry.

In the 1980s, the museum expanded into a neighbouring building, a 17th-century former orphanage renovated in 1986, to become the Museum of Contemporary Tapestry. It presents works by European artists who have renewed textile art, such as Thomas Gleb, Josep Grau-Garriga, Mario Prassinos and Yves Millecamps.

The collections trace the development of tapestry from Lurçat to the most recent textile forms.
