Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1952 by Henri Matisse himself in his native town. The painter gave his fellow citizens several dozen works, first shown in the town hall. In 1982 the collection moved to the Palais Fénelon, the former country residence of the archbishops of Cambrai, whose present building dates from the mid-18th century. The Département du Nord took over the management of the museum in 1992.
Over the decades successive donations greatly enriched the holdings: the donation of Auguste Herbin in 1956, that of Geneviève Claisse, and then that of Alice Tériade, installed from 2007. A first extension was inaugurated in 2002 by the architects Beaudouin.
A project to extend into the adjacent former covered market was launched in 2019. After several years of works, the museum reopened on November 23, 2024, in the Palais Fénelon and in the new building designed by the architect Bernard Desmoulin. The route now presents three collections: Matisse, Tériade and Herbin. The Parc Fénelon, laid out at the end of the 17th century, surrounds the palace.
