Over het museum
The museum is housed in the Manoir de la Pommerie in Cendrieux, in Périgord. Prince Victor Napoléon, grandson of Napoleon I's youngest brother, had gathered and catalogued a substantial set of family objects tracing the history of the two empires. On his death in 1926, these souvenirs passed to his children.
In 1949, his daughter Princess Marie-Clotilde, married to Count de Witt, settled at La Pommerie. In 1976, Prince Napoléon and Countess de Witt handed over a significant part of this heritage to the state. In 1998, more than 150 objects from the collection that had remained in the family were listed as historic monuments.
In 1999, Count Baudouin de Witt and his wife Isabelle opened their home to the public to show this collection, until then little known. The manor itself is entered on the supplementary inventory of historic monuments.
The museum presents more than 500 objects, paintings and sculptures. A donation in 2018 added dioramas of scenes from the imperial era, made up of around 3,000 lead figurines produced and painted by Jean-Pierre Brand. The Friends of the Musée Napoléon association supports the development of the site.
