Over het museum
Louis Pasteur moved in 1888 into an apartment fitted out for him at the heart of the newly opened Institut Pasteur, and lived there for the last seven years of his life. In the 1930s his grandson Louis Pasteur Vallery-Radot gave the Institute the furniture and objects of his grandparents, which made it possible to recreate the apartment as it had been arranged. The museum opened to the public on May 20, 1936.
The visit includes the apartment, a room of scientific memorabilia tracing Pasteur’s major discoveries, and a Byzantine-inspired crypt where Pasteur and his wife Marie rest. The architect Charles Girault designed the crypt, whose mosaics follow drawings by Luc-Olivier Merson and were executed by the Guilbert-Martin workshop.
The museum holds the “Maison des Illustres” label, and the building has been a listed historic monument since 1981. It is currently closed to the public for restoration and refurbishment of the Institute’s historic building, until November 2028. In the meantime the Institute offers a virtual tour on Google Arts & Culture and downloadable digital exhibitions.
