Over het museum
In 1880, Léopold-Henri Petiet gave the town of Limoux the house on the Tivoli promenade, where his family of painters had its studio, to create a drawing and painting school and a museum. The family added part of its collection: copies by Léopold and Auguste Petiet and several canvases by Marie Petiet (1854–1893), Léopold's daughter, who became a recognized artist and exhibited at the Salon.
Between 1902 and 1912, Étienne Dujardin-Beaumetz, Marie's husband, senator for the Aude and under-secretary of state for fine arts, enriched the collections. The museum occupies several adjoining houses fitted out at the end of the 19th century, with high ceilings, original skylights and old tiled floors.
The collection is devoted mainly to academic painting of the second half of the 19th century and to post-Impressionism, with works by Marie Petiet, Dujardin-Beaumetz, Achille Laugé, Henri Le Sidaner, Henri Lebasque and Aman-Jean. Some of the works are on deposit from national museums. The museum also has a collection of 53 medals from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and carries the “Musée de France” label.
