Musée Rupert-de-Chièvres

Over het museum

The museum is named after François Radegonde Rupert de Chièvres, a 19th-century owner who lived in Poitiers in a house built on the site of the former Augustinian cloister. There he brought together Flemish and Dutch paintings, furniture and faience. In 1887 he bequeathed his collections and his house to the Société des Antiquaires de l’Ouest. His family contested the bequest, which was finally confirmed in 1892, the year the museum opened.

The museum became municipal in 1947 and has carried the “Musée de France” label since 2002. It presents art from the 16th to the 18th century, which the Musée Sainte-Croix in Poitiers does not cover: history and genre paintings, portraits from the Netherlands and France, Italian works, faience and painted Renaissance enamels. The entrance portal, from the chapel of the Augustinian convent, is listed as a historic monument.

The museum had reopened in May 2007 after work on the lighting and a new faience cabinet of about 120 pieces. It has been closed to the public again since early 2009 for conservation work. No reopening date had been announced in the sources consulted.
