Over het museum
The museum was founded in 1922 through a gift from the Count and Countess of Toulouse-Lautrec to the city of Albi. It preserves the memory of the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in his birthplace. Maurice Joyant, a friend of the artist, and the painter’s mother, Adèle de Toulouse-Lautrec, played an important role in building the collection.
The museum occupies the Palais de la Berbie, a former 13th-century episcopal palace next to the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral. From the Renaissance until the 18th century, the fortress was converted into a residence with reception rooms and French formal gardens. The palace is a listed historic monument, and the Episcopal City of Albi has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.
Between 2001 and 2012, a major building project improved the reception area, created a new route and restored the architecture. The works revealed a 13th-century medieval tiled floor in the great hall and a late 15th-century painted ceiling in the Galerie d’Amboise.
The collections include paintings, lithographs, drawings and the complete set of Toulouse-Lautrec’s posters.
