Over het museum
The collections of the zoological museum go back to the natural history cabinet of the physician and naturalist Jean Hermann (1738–1800). After his death, the City of Strasbourg bought the collection in 1804 to prevent it from being scattered. It was then housed in several places around the city and enriched through purchases, donations and exchanges.
After 1871, the other scientific collections passed to the university, while the zoology collections remained the property of the City and moved in 1893 to a new building on boulevard de la Victoire, near the historic campus. The Second World War hit the museum hard: a large part of the large mammals was destroyed in a bombing raid in 1944. The museum reopened in 1946 and has been renovated several times.
Closed for works in September 2019, the museum reopened on September 19, 2025, after a project led by the City and the University of Strasbourg. It holds more than a million specimens, of which some 1,800 are on display. The route covers the history of the natural sciences and how ecosystems work, with more oral mediation and multimedia and interactive displays.
