Beperkt geopend (naar verwachting tot 2028). The museum route has been closed since January 2022 for the renewal of the museography and the restoration of the collections. Temporary exhibitions and the gardens remain accessible. A first phase of reopening of the museums is planned for 2028.

Over het museum

The Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer is a fortress built from 1557 on the orders of Emmanuel-Philibert of Savoy to defend the roadstead. Its star-shaped plan is attributed to the engineer Gian Maria Olgiati. In 1706, Vauban and his engineers saved it from destruction. The site ceased to be military in 1967, was listed as a historic monument in 1968 and became an art and culture centre in 1981.

The collections, which carry the “Musée de France” label, include the Boumeester-Goetz collection (some sixty works by Christine Boumeester and Henri Goetz, along with around fifty works from their personal collection, including pieces by Picasso, Miró, Hartung and Picabia), the Fondation Musée Volti (more than 180 sculptures and works on paper by the sculptor Volti) and the City’s collections (military objects linked to the Chasseurs Alpins battalion, works by Jean Cocteau, late 19th-century Russian paintings).

Renovation work on the fortress began in 2019. Since January 2022, the museum route has been closed in order to renew the museography and restore the collections. A first phase of reopening is planned for 2028. In the meantime, the Citadel hosts temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, and its gardens remain open.
