Over het museum
The Fermont work (ouvrage A2) was built from 1931 to 1935 in the Crusnes sector, to plans by the CORF. Designed as a large artillery work, it has seven combat blocks, although nine had been planned. Its galleries descend as deep as 30 meters underground.
In 1939–1940, more than 550 soldiers and 19 officers were stationed there. In June 1940, German forces bombarded the work several times; it held out until the armistice of June 22, 1940, and is considered undefeated. After the war, the army restored it and used it at the start of the Cold War, before gradually abandoning it.
Since 1977, the work has been open to the public thanks to volunteers from the Association des Amis de l’Ouvrage de Fermont et de la ligne Maginot. It has become one of the largest museums in France devoted to the Maginot Line and the Second World War. The visit combines an open-air museum, an equipment museum and a gallery route with barracks, a power plant, kitchens and a historic electric train.
