Over het museum

The Pavillon Populaire was built by the municipal architect Léopold Carlier as the “Cercle des étudiants” of the Association générale des étudiants de Montpellier and opened in 1891. The neo-Renaissance building is decorated with sculptures and a stone portico. The City of Montpellier acquired it in 1905 and entrusted its management to various associations throughout the 20th century. Until the early 1980s, the venue was the centre of the city’s major public celebrations, including the celebration of the Popular Front’s victory in 1936 and the end of the two world wars.

In 1991, the city had the building converted into an exhibition venue by the architect François Pin. At first it hosted photography projects run by associations, then the temporary exhibitions of the Musée Fabre while that museum was being renovated. In 2010, the City took over direct management in order to turn it into a venue for internationally renowned photography exhibitions, artistically directed by the photography historian Gilles Mora. Since January 2026, the artistic direction has been led by Luce Lebart.

The Pavillon Populaire has no permanent collection. Since 2011, it has presented three major exhibitions a year, designed specifically for the venue with renowned curators. They cover art photography of the 20th and 21st centuries, photojournalism, fashion, advertising, propaganda and documentary photography. Each exhibition is accompanied by a programme of educational activities and a catalogue. Every year in May, the venue also hosts the Les Boutographies festival.
